The North Star, a Ukrainian farming collective, is home to a group of hard-working people whose lives are shattered by the invasion of the German army during World War II. The occupation forces begin to take food, property and people for their use in the war against the Allies and the families of the collective begin to suffer. While some of the peasant farmers decide to join the resistance taking up camp in the hills, the remaining farmers come to a fateful decision as to what to do about the invaders.
